January Recruitment Challenge - the Tennessee FSP Local Group has stepped up with an innovative new idea to increase Participant sign-ups and raise funds for FSP promotion. Free Staters are all over the world. Staff Sergeant and Porcupine, Art Curtis sends holiday greetings to his family at home and Free Staters worldwide. Art has served in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq, all the while continuing his FSP recruiting efforts (note his hat in the picture). Before being deployed, Art was the Oklahoma Local Group Leader. Art talks about his wife; "My wife Lena is from Russia and grew up under tyrannical government. That has alot to do with shaping her particular desire for a free society. We both believe that Americans are forfeiting the principles that made America great. Reminds me of a little story. When she was going to be sworn in as an American citizen a few years ago, the ceremony being conducted in a federal building, so we had to go through metal detectors and have our bags searched. I had left my wallet out in the car all the way on the other side of the parking lot. The security people wouldn't let anyone in the building without government-issued ID. When everybody finally produced their documents, got inside and then into the waiting area, I could tell she was upset about something, but wasn't sure what, so I asked. I remember what she said: 'Just what kind of country am I becoming a citizen of? Americans cannot come and go as they please without papers? You know, even in soviet Russia there were not as many "security" checkpoints as here. Land of the free? How can denying freedom make us all safer?'" See you in NH, Art and Lena.

One of the top producers of new Participants and Friends for the FSP is Free Talk Live, the nationally syndicated radio program. 930 WKCT in Bowling Green, KY was added to the syndication line-up on December 1st, and FTL continues its remarkable growth with the addition of the 26th largest U.S. market, Sacramento, CA. Beginning January 7th, the Porcupine hosts will be addressing another 1.7 million potential listeners with the addition of the Sacramento station. The unique FTL AMP program, where loyal listeners contribute $3 or more per month to help promote the show, has just eclipsed $1,000 per month. Tune in or webstream the show Monday through Saturday, 8-10pm ET.

'Twas the time before Christmas when all through the land,
Not a wallet weren't pillaged nor card yet unscanned;
The people were stuck, between imp and the sea,
How to spend on their list and on liberty?

The founders are gone now all snug in their graves,
While the house and congress are acting like knaves;
And those in the free state, and we in the rest,
Have long ago settled where freedom is best.

When how to help best (not only to chatter),
I want to give cash to mine and the latter;
Away to the internet, we'll find a way,
A fine site called iGive, let's see what they say.

Pick out the Porc from the long list of causes,
And we'll give those statists more fits and more pauses.
When you buy for yours, or even yourself,
Some portion of spending will make you an elf.

So don't hesitate now or wait for St. Nick,
"Liberty in Our Lifetime" the phrase that you pick;
Help out today and the rest of your life,
With freedom and justice we'll be plenty rife.

[The iGive program lets you pick a cause, hint, hint: The Free State Project, and a percentage of your purchases from hundreds of online merchants will be donated to the FSP. I figure, if you're going to buy it anyway, why not let the FSP get a cut? For more information go to iGive.]

- Phil Denisch, Merchandise Coordinator

FSP Volunteer Updates & Positions Available

Thanks again to all who have been working to keep the FSP moving forward. While you are enjoying the holidays this month, think if perhaps you might be the perfect person to fill one of the following roles - we'll help you get started:

FSP EVENTS COORDINATOR – Keep tabs on all the events happening around the country where the FSP might gain recruits and arrange for FSP representation. Our current Events Coordinator, Sandy Pierre, has moved to the Free State and is focusing on in-state activism, but she will be able to help her successor get up to speed. See the FSP Job Description page for more info.

CAFEPRESS MANAGER and FSP MERCHANDISE DESIGNER – Do you have an idea for a cool T-shirt design? How about a Porcupine belt buckle? We've got some cool stuff, but we need much more cool stuff; like tees, tanks, hats, caps, jackets, flags, jewelry, posters, calendars, postcards, stickers, and more! How about FSP matchbooks, lighters and pipes? The possibilities are endless with you in the design seat. Try out your designs on CafePress and if they are a hit we'll make 'em in-house. Truly the world (of FSP merchandise) will be your oyster :)

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR PROJECT MANAGERS – Yep, I already need help! If you like working with people and projects, I could really use some help in following up with our increasing number of enthusiastic volunteers, finding the best roles to fit their visions and talents, and helping them nurture their projects to fruition. Bonus: you get to work with a really swell guy and show him what he's been doing wrong all this time. (Note that several people can fill this position)

These are just some of the many volunteer opportunities available with the Free State Project. You can view other openings on the Organizational Chart. Please contact Volunteer Coordinator, Nik Ludwig, for more information, and thank you for helping achieve Liberty in Our Lifetime! - Nik

In New Hampshire

The Freedom Friends Tuath has been formed in New Hampshire. What is a Tuath, you ask? A Tuath is a means of a society functioning without a Government. The word comes from the Irish experience of over 1000 years of a Stateless Society. The new Freedom Friends Tuath is based upon the Zero Aggression Principle - no human being has the right, under any circumstances, to initiate force against another human being, nor to threaten or delegate its initiation.

"Somebody's got to say no to government", said Russell Kanning at the Social Security card burn and protest held outside the Social Security Administration offices in Concord, NH on November 12th. • The Civic Action department seeks to bring voluntary, non-governmental assistance to local Granite Staters. Dave Mincin is looking for energetic fun-loving people to help him bring liberty solutions to our neighborhoods.
  • Research and Legislative bill analysis is performed year 'round and allows the NHLA to focus support or opposition to bills. It also provides the research necessary to develop the annual Legislative Report Card

The Board voted to strike the informal 2006 goal for obtaining 20,000 signatures and to allow Participants who thought this goal was a deadline to opt out at the end of 2006. The Board also decided to promote early moving, in part by deepening and expanding the New Hampshire information department. New Hampshire Liberty Alliance (NHLA) Civic Action held a fundraiser Sunday, September 18th at Loudon International Speedway. It was the NASCAR "Sylvania 300" - the biggest race day in NH this year. Thanks to the effort of 24 folks arriving at the track at 5:30am to be race event ushers and working until almost 6:30pm, they were able to raise nearly $2,000 for Civic Action The goal of the NHLA Civic Action department is to bolster the culture of liberty within the hearts and minds of the people of New Hampshire. Further, to open a wide, robust dialogue on the benefits of liberty among the people, political candidates, and the office holders in New Hampshire.

The Life of Freedom

Whenever I think of freedom I think it looks a lot like New Hampshire. Because of all the freedom loving people who live here, this state becomes freedom. With the colors of the great outdoors, the free-thinking can do anything as long as it follows the two fundamental laws: do all that you have agreed to do, and do not encroach on other persons or their property. The taste of it is as sweet as a violet lollipop on a stick. Sappy and piney, the smell has a natural scent to it. Liberty has a way of making persons want to change the all-powerful government.

The day to day organization and operation of the FSP will now be led by those two VPs, who will share the work of managing the existing departments. They will report to Amanda Phillips, who remains the President of the FSP and will focus more of her efforts on public relations and media representation.

Brian Wright's new report, FSP Porcupine Festival, 2005 is a great read, insightful and amusing! Varrin's Czar's Report will be posted soon and we'd love to post your report too - see how on the Reports page.

New Hampshire wins another wonderful award - five months ago, NH was crowned as the Most Livable state - #1 out of 50 states. In June it was named as the Most Improved, and at the end of July, it was NH again in the top spot in the 2005 KIDS COUNT Data Book! This annual report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation ranks the very latest state-by-state data in areas such as education, employment, income, poverty, health and youth risk factors. According to this report, there is no better state for kids (or their parents). Shhh, only tell freedom-lovers about this!

Thank you to all who have responded to the Board of Director's request for suggestions and input on how, and if, to restructure the Project to increase our chances of success in creating a free state. There are some exciting and fresh ideas being sent in and discussed on the Forum. Please send in your thoughts for consideration before September 1st.

Media and press this month included the PorcFest articles Taking Freedom for Granite in the Boston Phoenix and Porc Fest Draws 450 Libertarians in the Coos County Democrat.

Hey early movers! When you move to NH, please let the FSP volunteers know by emailing or calling 888 532-4604! We all want to know about the migration's early progress. And before you move, or when you visit NH, please contact the FSP Welcome Wagon for networking and community. The FSP Welcome Wagon has grown deeper and stronger! The last meet and greet was held in Epsom, NH on August 5th, where 30 Porcs and friends were very pleased to greet two newly moved families.

As usual, all kinds of things are happening at Free Talk Live. FTL wins a podcast award in the category Best Cultural/Political Podcast! Listenership continues to grow too with the addition of internet affiliate RantRadio and more radio stations. Tune in to the web stream, podcast or on the radio, and call in to the show - the hosts are Porcupines!

Rockin' FSP outreach tables were operated at three locations on the Van's Warped Tour in July that featured bands such as Offspring, Strung Out, Reliant K, Dropkick Murphys and others. The FSP tables greeted concert-goers in Buffalo, NY, Pittsburg, PA and Northampton, MA. Thanks to Keith Carlsen and his volunteers.

In New Hampshire

Organizations, activities and events of interest in NH:

2005 Liberty Ratings! The New Hampshire Liberty Alliance released the 2005 NHLA Report Card and handed out its coveted Legislator of the Year Award at its annual Liberty Dinner July 30th. Look over the Report Card - some very impressive pro-liberty voting. The Legislator of the Year is Clifford Newton.

The Liberty Dinner was an overwhelming success once again and featured the release of the NHLA Report Card, the award for Legislator of the Year and was highlighted by speeches by Congressman Ron Paul and Jack Cole, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP). The dinner was delicious and the company priceless!

More NHLA news:

  • another Legislative Workshop was held August 7th, where freedom-focused people gathered to go over the NH Bills that the NHLA will support, introduce, or work against. More volunteers are welcome in this effort.
  • NHLA Day at the Races will be held September 18th. It will be a fundraiser and awareness effort at the stock car races. All volunteers will get a T-shirt while assisting with ushering, concessions and parking.

Taxpayer holidays - who doesn't love a tax holiday? The State of NH ran an ad campaign August 7, 10 and 11 in the Boston Globe, aimed directly at Massachusetts residents and sales tax payers. Scorecard for sales tax-free days: NH = 365, MA = 2.

The Liberty Scholarship Fund provides donated funds directly to families in NH for non-public education. The LSF just awarded 3 new scholarships for the 2005/2006 school year. The LSF Endowment Fund has also been established with initial funding. The Endowment Fund helps to assure the long-term success of the LSF mission.

The Libertarian Party of NH Chair, John Babiarz, made an appearance on Hannity and Colmes on Fox News, August 12th. The topic was the planned eminent domain proceedings in order to build a Constitution Park on Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer's NH land. See the World Net Daily article on this and the other eminent domain plan to seize Justice John Souter's property in NH to build the Lost Liberty Hotel initiated by Logan Darrow's FreeStar Media.

Full Slate for the Free State is an aggressive plan to run a full slate of Libertarian Party candidates all across New Hampshire!

The following rapidly growing Porcupine groups in NH are open to FSP Participants, friends and all those considering moving to their area:
  • The Merrimack Valley Porcupines' last meeting, held in concert with the Freedom Summit, drew 60 people! This active group of Porcs and friends meets next on August 27th and features speaker Wayne Anderson of the Free State Objectivists Club.
  • The Seacoast Porcupines' monthly meeting regularly draws 20 interested people and meets the 3rd Saturday on the month in Somersworth, NH.
  • The Modnadnock Porcupines are an active bunch! A meet and greet was held August 14th for all the new recent movers to the Keene and Modnadnock area. For amazing levels of new activism - see the NH Underground's Forum

Gun Owners of New Hampshire, GO-NH, keeps you up to date with the many important Legislative actions and alerts in NH. Upcoming special events of note:

  • GO-NH Annual Banquet, September 17th. Keynote speaker will be Alan Gottlieb, the founder of the Second Amendment Foundation.
  • New Hampshire Outdoor Pistol Championships, September 24th & 25th.

The Free State Objectivists Club meets monthly to share ideas and socialize with other active-minded people in the Concord area. The next meeting will include the presentation of the first five lectures from Nathaniel Brandon's NBI lecture series.

The Coalition of New Hampshire Taxpayers, CNHT, has a live streaming radio show on Thursdays from 6-8pm (also on 90.7 FM in NH). Check out the CNHT Insider News posts for details of many news stories of interest to NH taxpayers!

The Board of Directors of the FSP has requested your input. Jason Sorens, FSP Chairman and Founder, brings this message to you:

With Free Staters continuing to move to New Hampshire ahead of the 20,000-signer threshold, and with our original September 2006 goal for 20,000 signatures on the horizon, we need to consider whether to change our Mission Statement, Statement of Intent, or Participation Guidelines

Is there a way we can restructure the Project to increase our chances of success in creating a free state, and in achieving liberty in our lifetime? The FSP Board of Directors wants to hear what you have to say.

You can post your ideas on our forum, send them to us by email, participate in the discussion at the upcoming Porcupine Freedom Festival (PorcFest) or attend one of many to-be-scheduled local group meetings in August to make your views heard.

We'll carefully consider all input we receive by September 1st, and we plan to make a decision on any changes by October 1st. Thanks for your help in working toward a freer society!

The June edition of The Quill covers the Porcfest of course, and features Tim Condon’s popular serial, Supercharged Solitons, and an essay by J. Alexander called Libertarian Women, that has sparked a dialog about where libertarian women are and what they are doing for freedom. For some of that dialog see Forum thread

New Hampshire wins 2005 Most Improved State award! Scott Morgan, President of Morgan Quitno Press, the publisher of State Trends, 2nd Edition, said, “Sometimes life just isn’t fair for states other than New Hampshire,” said Scott Morgan, President of Morgan Quitno Press. “New Hampshire won our Most Livable State Award earlier this year and has performed well in nearly all of Morgan Quitno’s surveys.”

In the wake of the Supreme Court's recent decision that governments may take our private property for economic developement and to raise tax revenue, Logan Darrow Clemons, CEO of Freestar Media, LLC and FSP supporter, causes a big splash with his plan to turn the tables. The Lost Liberty Hotel Project intends to use eminent domain to seize the New Hampshire property of Supreme Court Justice David Souter. In an interview on Court TV on July 12th, Logan said, "One reason is that there is a project under way called the Free State Project, that's where people who believe in limited government and maximum freedom, are all moving to New Hampshire, so that at least one of the 50 states can be
as free as possible."

The audience is nationwide/worldwide. The spots are 1-minute spots and will begin airing on Saturday, 20 times per day. Thanks to the station and the donor for providing yet another outreach method to all of the liberty-minded people out there.
